Upper airway obstruction is a critical concern for paediatric health workers in South Africa due to children's vulnerability, common causes like infections, foreign body aspiration, and allergic reactions, and the high burden of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV. Limited healthcare resources, especially in rural areas, make early recognition and skilled airway management essential to improving outcomes. Health workers play a key role in educating caregivers on prevention, recognising respiratory distress signs and acute and chronic management.

This course has been designed to equip healthcare providers with the essential knowledge and skills required to appropriately screen/assess and manage upper airway obstruction in children, according to their role and scope of practice.
