This course has been created to establish foundational principles in the provision of first aid for healthcare personnel who do not have training in medical care.

  • Course Design: Self-directed

  • Duration: It will take approximately 4 hours to complete.

  • Eligibility for this course:
    • Healthcare professional working in the Western Cape.
    • Rehabilitation healthcare workers, carers, social workers, and other healthcare facility personnel

  • Accreditation: HPCSA: Level 1 - 5 Clinical CPD points; WCDHW Nursing CPD Accredited: 3 CPD points in Area of Practice.

  • Certification: Participants need 70% pass mark for final quiz in order to receive a certificate.

  • Published: March 2025

Course curriculum

The following topics are covered in this course:

Chapter 1: Core

  • Introduction and principles of first aid
  • Emergency scene management and casualty assessment
  • Core first aid techniques, resuscitation, bleeding control, recovery position and moving casualties


Chapter 2: Bleeding

  • Approach to minor & major bleeding wounds
  • Approach to nosebleeds


Chapter 3: Breathing

  • Approach to asthma attacks & allergic reactions
  • Approach to choking, strangulation & suffocation (including drowning)


Chapter 4: Injuries

  • Approach to burn wounds
  • Approach to musculoskeletal injuries
  • Approach to animal bites and stings
  • Approach to major accidents with head & neck trauma, or multiple casualties

 

Chapter 5: Illness

  • Approach to a collapsed or unconscious casualty
  • Approach to vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Approach to other illness: heat-related illness, heart attack and stroke


Chapter 6: Other

  • Approach to someone poisoned or overdosed
  • Approach to someone giving birth outside a hospital
